I direct a research lab at the University of Rochester called the Families, Achievement Motivation, & Identity Lab, also affectionately known as the FAM&I Lab. In this lab, we examine psychological, cultural, and social processes involved in the positive development of adolescents and young adults.
First, we examine the development of achievement motivation in STEM fields, racial/ethnic identity, and gender identity.
Second, we examine how motivational and identity developmental dimensions intersect, investigating how youths' STEM motivation is rooted and oriented around their racial/ethnic and gender identities and experiences.
Finally, we test how social figures (e.g., parents, siblings, peers, teachers, etc.) support youths' development and protect them from the effects of negative experiences like discrimination and socioeconomic disadvantage.

Mentorship
At the FAM&I Lab, training rising scholars in rigorous, ethical, and collaborative research and in vital professional skills to navigate their careers is my main priority. My mentorship involves:
A working relationship that is collaborative and inclusive of diverse perspectives;
Scaffolded training that moves mentees toward mastery, autonomy, and self-direction; and
Development of mentees’ community cultural wealth through institutional connections, research collaborations, and fruitful secondary mentorships.
